On 2–3 October 2026, the workshop “Translation and Diplomacy in the Early Modern Ottoman World” took place at the Institute of History of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. Organised jointly by the Critical Heritage Studies HUB and the Institute of History of the Jagiellonian University as well as the Department of History of the European University Institute, the event brought together scholars exploring the role of dragomans as diplomatic intermediaries and producers of knowledge in the early modern Ottoman and Persianate worlds. The discussions focused on translation, diplomacy, cross-cultural mediation, and intellectual exchange.
Two of the project members delivered papers: Zsuzsanna Cziráki (ÖAW IHB, Vienna) presented “The Habsburg Resident and His Dragoman: Dual Diplomatic Agency in Seventeenth-Century Constantinople,” while Natalia Królikowska-Jedlińska (University of Warsaw) talked about “Gaining the Khan’s Confidence: Pierre Texier de Lancey and French Diplomacy in the Crimean Khanate (1748–1754).”
