The Princes of Transylvania in the Thirty Years War

We are pleased to announce the publication of The Princes of Transylvania in the Thirty Years War, edited by our Principal Investigator, Gábor Kármán. The volume presents for the international audience the current Hungarian research concerning the activities of Gábor Bethlen and György Rákóczi I, and all significant aspects of Transylvanian participation in the Thirty Years War, including military history, diplomatic history, war finances, and media history. The volume dedicates attention also to the Ottoman involvement, the specific feature of the Transylvanian rulers’ participation in the Thirty Years War, which derives from their position as Christian tributaries of the Ottoman Empire.

Our project is represented not only by our PI, who, in two separate chapters, explores the alliance-seeking efforts of the Transylvanian princes in the direction of Sweden and examines the decisive role religious liberties played in these decades; but also by Zsuzsanna Hámori Nagy, reflecting on the diplomatic relationship between the principality and France.

You can find the volume on Brill’s website.
