Translators at the Habsburg court

Cziráki Zsuzsanna: A Habsburg Monarchia keleti nyelvi tolmácsai a 17. században. Budapest: reciti, 2024.

A publication by project member Zsuzsanna Cziráki has recently come out. In her monograph, Zsuzsanna focuses on a special aspect of the diplomatic communications between the Habsburg and the Ottoman Empire, the translator of Eastern languages. These figures carried out a task the intricacy of which was manyfold and had to serve as mediators not just between empires and languages but cultures as well. Based on evidence from several Austrian archives, the book offers a detailed overview of early modern translating practices, based on nearly 70 translators’ careers and lives.
